In the South Spaarndam polder, the polder was drained by a steam pumping station from 1874. The old steam pumping station was replaced before 1921 by this 60 HP diesel pumping station. When World War II broke out and no gas oil was available, the system switched to electric power.

Since the engine and pump were integrated into one unit, a pulley was mounted on the crankshaft. Many smaller parts were stored in the basement of the main pumping station, located about twenty kilometers away.

When we had to retrieve the engine in 1984, we were not allowed to tear down or damage any part of the building. This meant that everything had to be removed through a door of about two by one meter. As a result, everything was dismantled and pulled outside using sleds and sliding plates with winches, without leaving a single scratch.

Noteworthy is the placement and drive of the two-stage compressor: vertically mounted against the cylinder and driven via a lever from the center of the piston. The starting system operated at an air pressure of +/- 60 atmospheres and required 50 atmospheres for air injection.

In 1913, the steam engine that maintained the water level in the Mijlpolder, Hoekse Waard near Dordrecht, was modernized and replaced by a Deutz Airlast Injection engine. This engine was supplied by the Gasmotoren Fabrik Filiale Amsterdam and installed in the Mijl pumping station. It remained in operation from 1913 to 1936.

In 1936, the engine was moved from the Mijlpolder to Ulft, to the sawmill “Het Anker” owned by G.H.M. Eppink. There, it powered various woodworking machines year after year, using a leather belt around the flywheel and a drive system. The company was later sold to Mr. Tervoort. When the new owner, Mr. Tervoort, called Sjoerd in 1988 to inform him that the engine would be permanently shut down, we agreed on a price and dismantled the engine completely over three Fridays in February 1988. The crankcase, in particular, cost us a lot of sweat. We didn’t sleep for 24 hours, of which 15 hours were spent continuously working with a heavy air hammer and approximately 20 tons of push and pull force to loosen this part from the concrete foundation.

In the summer of 1988, the engine was set up, overhauled, and restored, and it ran for the first time again in May 1989. It is started at 60 atmospheres and has an injection pressure of 50 atmospheres. The pressure is generated by a horizontal two-stage compressor. The bore is 390 mm.
