Automated pallet infeed and outfeed for efficient pallet exchange operations
In a wide range of industries, including the pharmaceutical and food sectors, products often need to be transferred from one pallet type to another. The reasons vary and may include hygiene requirements, production processes that require plastic pallets, or the conversion from single-use pallets to reusable pallets.
To support these applications, various pallet-changing solutions are available, such as pallet rotators and horizontal pallet exchange machines. A common requirement across all of these systems is the efficient supply and removal of pallets.
In many facilities, pallet loading and unloading is still performed using forklifts or electric pallet stackers. While effective, this approach is time-consuming and requires significant involvement from logistics personnel. By automating pallet infeed and outfeed, these labor costs can be reduced. Automation also minimizes forklift traffic, resulting in a safer, more organized, and more efficient working environment.
The Pallet Transfer Hub typically consists of two pallet dispensers that supply pallets (for example, wooden pallets), a pallet dispenser that receives and stores the removed pallets, and a push or pull transfer unit. Depending on the production process, goods can be pushed directly from one pallet to another. In industries such as pharmaceuticals, however, products are often placed on slip sheets. This allows the entire load to be pulled from one pallet onto another, reducing the risk of damaging packaging or the products themselves during the pallet exchange process.
The pallet dispensers are modular in design and can be configured as towers with capacities ranging from five to as many as twenty-five pallets, depending on pallet weight. In logistics operations, the most commonly used pallet sizes are the Euro pallet (800 × 1200 mm) and the block pallet (1000 × 1200 mm). Because plastic pallets are generally thicker than wooden pallets, the system is designed to automatically compensate for differences in pallet thickness, ensuring smooth and reliable operation.
- Improves Safety - Reduces forklift traffic around the pallet exchange area.
- Flexible Capacity - Modular pallet dispensers can hold 5 to 25 pallets.
- Supports Multiple Pallet Types
- Automatic Height Compensation - Adjusts for differences in pallet thickness automatically.
